There are moments in life when nothing is obviously wrong, yet something no longer feels quite right.
You may be succeeding at work, meeting responsibilities, and doing all the things you expected yourself to do. From the outside, everything looks fine. Yet underneath, there is a restlessness. A sense that you have outgrown something, even if you cannot yet name what it is.
Perhaps you find yourself asking:
- Is this still what I want?
- What comes next?
- Why doesn’t this feel the way I thought it would?
These questions can be unsettling. They can also be signs that you are standing at a threshold.
What Is a Threshold?
A threshold is a space between.
Between an ending and a beginning. Between who you have been and who you are becoming. Between a chapter that feels complete and one that has not yet fully emerged.
Sometimes thresholds arrive through significant life events, a new role, retirement, burnout, loss, a career change, or a long-awaited opportunity. Other times, they arrive quietly, as a growing sense that something is shifting beneath the surface.
Signs You May Be Standing at a Threshold
You may be standing at a threshold if:
- Things look fine on the outside, but something feels different on the inside.
- What once energized or motivated you no longer does.
- You feel drawn toward something new, even if you cannot yet describe it.
- You are holding both excitement and uncertainty about the future.
- The same questions keep returning, asking for your attention.
Thresholds can feel uncomfortable because they rarely come with a clear map. We often want immediate answers, certainty, and a plan.
Yet some transitions ask something different of us.
They ask us to pause.
To listen.
To become curious about what is ending, what is emerging, and what matters most.
Often, meaningful change begins not with certainty, but with awareness.
